In Holland will be held a consultative referendum on the issue of the Association Agreement EU-Ukraine

hollandAt the beginning of April 2015 the Association Agreement EU-Ukraine had ratified lower house of Dutch Parliament. Later, July 7, the document approved upper house of the Dutch parliament. Thus the Kingdom of the Netherlands completed the ratification of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union.

The Agreement shall enter into force in stages and by chapters. The next chapter deals with the Free Trade Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union.

On this occasion will be held a consultative referendum in the Netherlands scheduled for April 6, 2016. For carrying out of the referendum have been collected over 400 thousand signatures of the required minimum of 300 thousand.

In a referendum will be proposed:
"Support for the law on the approval of the Netherlands, the Association Agreement between the European Union and Ukraine"

To participate in the vote may be at least 18 years of age or older who have Dutch citizenship and are not deprived of the right to vote.

The Dutch government is planning to organize a campaign in support of Ukraine on the eve of the upcoming referendum. This was stated by Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte.mark rutte

"I'll be there and I'll explain to people why we signed the agreement ... We are - trading nation. We live on free trade agreements, and Ukraine is another example of this", - said Rutte.

According to Prime Minister of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, which currently holds the EU presidency, the agreement is beneficial for both Europe and Amsterdam. In his words, all the Dutch government supports the agreement between Ukraine and the EU.

"People who are inclined to vote against, believe that this is the first step towards EU membership. This has nothing common with merger.", - He added.

bert koendersDutch Foreign Minister Bert Koenders said that this agreement serves the interests of the Dutch security, helping to stabilize the eastern regions of the EU, and this is important both for Ukraine and for the Netherlands. According to him, the government will actively promote to the public the idea of a positive response to the referendum.

The referendum results are advisory in nature and are not binding. But if in the referendum will take part at least 30% of the electorate, the Dutch government should consider the issue. For example, if Dutchmen will vote against it, then the government should reconsider its decision to ratify the agreement.

At the same Koenders said that he can not talk in advance about a possible government response to the outcome of the referendum.

"If we advance say: " Yes, we will follow the results ", it would create a precedent for all the referendums of this type. If we say: " No, we will not ", it would undermine the referendum law, which is a democratic tool" - Koenders said.
